Ego

October 10, 2009 trugiaz Leave a comment

A part of me would be very happy of where am I now.

Another part would be very disappointed, because I couldn’t have the trivial parts.

After all the talk of the insignificant speck dust in the universe and how life is over-rated.

I am still a human after all.

The Wisdom and Knowledge of The Taxi Driver-part 1

“In many parts of the world there’s always the group of people who run the streets, both night and day. They interact with vast number of people of different characters, while they themselves are also a people of character, whom sometimes annoying, plain hilarious, shady, cool, educated or street smart. Some of them are very fond of speaking their minds, while others are very shy. These are the collection of the wisdom and knowledge of the taxi drivers, whom are kind enough to share and talk to me during my travel across Indonesia (mainly Jakarta).”

  • On the recent terrorist attack: “The xxxx must be the one behind the attacks in Indonesia and the rest of the world, just take alook at 9/11 why are most of the xxxx employees are taking leave on that day?”
  • On Indonesia’s Independence: “Indonesia has it all. It has achieved its independence, it’s a prosperous country, its beauty is unsurpassed, pity it lacks one thing. Justice.”
  • On Swine flu or any other flu: “Isn’t swine or the bird flu is created as a biological weapon? It’s politics all along I tell you.”
  • On the increasing number of AIDS patient in rural area particularly Papua: “There’s only one explanation why the incidence rate is so much higher in Papua compared to Jakarta (in which has higher number of prostitute). The lack of education.” ~ I added “as well as the low economic power”
  • On prostitution: “The prostitute along this street is really not a prostitute at all, they dress nicely not wearing any skimpy clothes yet often I see they’re often being picked up by cars. Those who pick up must have a spare money on their sleeve, heck if I had some I’d probably do it as well”

The Eyes See What They Want To See

August 3, 2009 trugiaz 1 comment

I always said that the concept of truth is like the horizon, a person stands in one place wouldn’t be able to grasp what others see.
Put it simply to fulfill the concept, you can see it, others can see it, but nobody can comprehend what is the absoluteness of truth, it’s because each one sees what they want to see. A different perspective for every person.

Just like the door, all we can think are “is it bolted?” “is it locked?” “is somebody just closed it?” or ”are we the one that lost the key?”

What if I tell you, that the key or lock did not exist and the door is a figment of our imagination, painted by an artist which makes we believe that we’re being locked out. Just like the concept of a horizon-slash-truth, you wanted to see a door and its lock, you’ll see a locked door. Where as in other’s perception the locked door might not exist at all.

Now if you still see a locked door, turn back and take a look. You’re being locked outside, where fate always cross, chances are always present like inconsistency and beauty hides itself in chaos.

I promise myself today and forever one thing; “In my pursuit of happiness, never ever it will across my thought at the very least, to destroy the happiness, the feeling and the laying foundation of life of somebody else, because I wouldn’t know whether the people that I’ve hurted will recover from all the pain or never at all.”

(and yet) Another Resolution

April 29, 2009 trugiaz Leave a comment

Over the past, I have seen people being taught by the universe regarding the karma, its principles and the very valuable lessons that could be generated from it. However most people are not taking any lessons at all, or simply they didn’t realise that the lessons were there.

Many things causing this,  the most visible perpetrator is the emotion; it shrouded our judgement and vision like a mist and it denies our logic above all. Emotion, basicly would turn a person to the very thing I loathe.

However, the more we loathe or hate, the more we become all of those things that we hate or loathe.

Thus I asked God for objectivity, to shed the mist from my judgement and to allow me to see with clarity. To learn from karmic existence without any ounce of emotion running from it.

Make me embrace reality for all it is and how bitter it is, with no fear or loathe and hate. For I do not wish to become that very thing  that I loathe, fear and hate.

I wish to be straight not bent

I wish to be honest not crooked

I wish to be truth not lies

I wish to be cure not disease

I wish to be aids not trouble

I wish to be peace not war.

And I wish these all to all the people, so there are no need for loathe, fear and hate.

Cheers

Our Drug Culture: The Love of Antibiotics

April 5, 2009 trugiaz Leave a comment

Writer’s notes: When I write “our” on the title I am referring to people in South East Asia or Asia Pacific and most particularly in Indonesia.

Last time I fall sick, I was doing an experiment on myself. Not that I fall sick due to the experiment, I was experimenting on how long I could recover fully from the sickness by not coming to the doctor and moreover to not consume any antibiotic to recover myself.

It took me a month.

The people here loves their antibiotic and especially the doctor that prescribe them with the antibiotic. A doctor which could cure their patients in a single visit, is a good doctor and very kind as well, because not only the patients get cured easily they also kind of doctor who won’t take any advantage of the patients. But how will it affect the general populations in the future? while science and medical students are very aware of the term ”super-bugs”, the general population do not. The continuos bombardment of antibiotic, and the low understanding regarding the use is giving way to these “super-bugs” to increase in the terms of numbers and kinds.

What are the “super-bugs?”

They could be present as the insects which capable to resist the strongest insecticide, or as the infamous Methicillin Resistant Streptococcus Aureus (MRSA), regardless of the name they could only mean one thing. Trouble.

Like every species, this super-bugs have come a long way, they evolve from the most primitive form to the ones which contain all the necessity to survive. Humans evolve from apes (creationists please do not argue on this), as a species we learn to use tools and to exploit the nature in order to gain the favour, whether to hunt or gather, in a simpler word, we learn how to survive. These super-bugs are also the same, although they don’t use tools they survive because of the difference in their genetic material.

Consider the case of the white butterfly on the height of Industrial revolution in England. They originally were white in colour, because living in a temperate climate they need the colour tone in order to survive from their hunter. however some of them born in a unusual circumstances, with black instead of white as their wings. Easier to be recognised, easier to be hunted is the fate of these black butterfly, however the Industrial Revolution came, and the usual white snow was polluted to become black, and the condition was altered. For the benefit of the story let’s just say, nowadays there are more black butterfly than the white one in England.

The story above is the similar picture in the context of the super-bugs, where they actually also the product natural selections, however the one who acts as the “natural selections” are none other than mankind with their love of antibiotics.

“So it’s just a little bugger which is difficult to be eliminated?” not exactly. This little bugger causes many hospital acquired infection on patients which are recovering from their diseases and finally could cause complications or even death. The fact that they are more antibiotics resistant, would make them very difficult to eliminate with the present level of antibiotics and if they could be eliminated there is still chances for them to evolved to be resistant to that particular antibiotic.

What can we do?

Consider MRSA as a very expensive experience, we can actually slow down the transformation of other bacteria or viruses to become the next “super-bugs”, avoiding arms race between species. How to slow down the transformation is easy that is by do not using antibiotic in order to cure non-significant diseases (common cold, sore throat, fever etc.). The problems (sigh) lies on whether people could understand that they are not supposed to take antibiotic as simple as taking candy.

To raise awareness about this antibiotic issue is the solution, however is not the same as raising awareness about issues like the global warming. It is more like putting a warning on cigarettes’ pack  to tell people the hazard to your health, however it seldom kept them away from smoking. Furthermore, by telling this, people must accept that evolution is real and we are part of it, while in this region people still believe that evolution is a concept where man comes from primate.

It would be long and lengthy process to educate the people, perhaps as long as the development of the new super-bugs, however as it is necessary to be done, none is too late after all.

The movement could began in hospitals or clinics by doctors, in which if there are any patients coming with the symptoms of cold or fever try to explain to them that the disesase did not require the administration of antibiotics, just plenty of rest and liquids and paracetamols is enough. Of course doctor, have to be more than able to explain the matter to the patients and that requires a great communication skills.

What can a patient do then? other than educating themselves, patients are also having the rights to have the proper explanations from the doctor and finally do not judge the doctor based on what medication that they give you or how long does it takes to recover.

As a final notes, I will say that prevention is better than care thus live your life healthily and love your vessels, you can’t actually change them anytime if you have trouble.

Cheers

Do fancy gadgets ensure more productivity?

August 9, 2008 trugiaz 2 comments

Imagine this, you’re visiting the other guy’s office, turns out all of their staff working on the shiny aluminium entry level iMac, back at your office, you only equipped by your boss with the Dell tower + the standard monitor, keyboard and mouse. You run Windows XP pro and the other guy using OS X leopard, however, the catch is both of you are having the same computer in the terms of specifications and only differs in the operating system used and of course, the chance of using a fancy computer (as Bruce and Fred implies). Thus at the end of the day why do you did not have the same motivation or could produce the same productivity compared to the other guy? (assuming you guys were working on the same field)

Now imagine this, your wife cooks in a completely standard kitchen and for her book club meeting she made a buffalo chicken wings. The other guy wife, also make the buffalo chicken wing in a fully modernised kitchen, however the same ingredients were used.  How come at the book club meeting all the people come to the other guy’s wife’s chicken wing and not your wife?

And finally in an article in the lifehacker, the guy who created Ubuntu promised that in a period of two years he will create a linux distro which will be more prettier and flashier than OS X. All is done to get people to use Ubuntu and thus creating more support towards it.

All of the examples above were suggesting that prettier and flashier machinery or equipment will make yourself more motivated and eager to do work thus increasing productivity. To put it into more sense, it is all about the user experience, whether to create a simple proposal or creating a tables with number or even to show off a fancy presentation. This user experience have to some extend push a creation to become more and more fancier thus giving better user experience.

However, for some people this is just a lot of gibberish. Better user experience would not ensure that a person will work more productively, it is all just depending on the person, well I myself also couldn’t agree more.

Anyway, what about the rest of the world? does a fancier machine and better user experience will make you more productive, or does simplicity and easier manipulation of the tool is the key to happy boss?

I personally think it is depending on the person him/herself, and well a pretty equipment does help sometimes.

Apparently sending SMS to some number with hefty cost will make you change the fortune of your life or changing your destiny here in Indonesia

This is even lower compared to the two actresses. sigh.

Gorilla (Monster) Pod, a review

June 7, 2008 trugiaz Leave a comment

Ever since I bought my new digital camera, I always found difficulty to take timed pictures which include myself on it. This is mainly because : first, I didn’t have a tripod, second,We were unfortunate enough to take pictures in a place that didn’t have elevated flat surface and lastly I didn’t trust random people easily to take pictures with my camera (because sometimes the pictures would turn out to be bad)

Then one day after reading an article in lifehacker, regarding a tripod which you could use ANYwhere and attach itself to almost anything. The tripod itself is called a gorilla pod (even though I didn’t see the resemblance between the tripod and gorilla (it look more like a monster to me)), it is bendy, small and lightweight thus essentials for photographer who is always on the go.

Finished with the article I went to the product website, found out that the price for the tripod is USD 25 (with international shipping, the total would be USD 45) for the packaged. The “eco-packaged” is priced cheaper due to the lack of packaging (USD 22), and both comes with 6 different colours.

Then yesterday, I went to the Sunway Pyramid and see that there is a promotional fair of digital photography and video recording with brands like Nikon, Canon, Samsung and JVC presents. Interested I went to the one of the booth and realised that they have the original gorilla pod, priced only for RM 50 or USD 16. To make the review short I bought it, and tried as soon as I got back.

The first impression I got when I have the Gorilla Pod that felt light yet sturdy, of course because of its ability to bend, it somehow looked very bizarre and creepy in some kind of way. Then I attached the clips onto my digital camera and begin to play around with its “tentacle”. The very first position that I tried is of course the normal tripod position and found that it is very stable on the flat surface.

Next position would be more difficult like attaching it on my chair’s handle, very stable as well

Well after this I’ll try to attach my camera on it, but I don’t dare enough to put it in my chair handle, thus I put it on my water bottle, and then again it was stand there like it was climbing it, very stable.

The tripod also comes with safety precaution for those worried about their camera. It included the lock to securely attached your camera which can be seen in the picture below.

In conclusion, I was very satisfied with the product and believe that USD 25 is already a good price. It is very secured and strong when it is attached to any surface, Joby also provide the Gorilla Pod for DSLR and DSLR zoom for those looking one (of course different price). The only drawback with this tripod that I found is that sometimes it is hard to turn the lock or to detach your camera from the tripod, other than that it is top notch.
