Our Drug Culture: The Love of Antibiotics

Writer’s notes: When I write “our” on the title I am referring to people in South East Asia or Asia Pacific and most particularly in Indonesia.

Last time I fall sick, I was doing an experiment on myself. Not that I fall sick due to the experiment, I was experimenting on how long I could recover fully from the sickness by not coming to the doctor and moreover to not consume any antibiotic to recover myself.

It took me a month.

The people here loves their antibiotic and especially the doctor that prescribe them with the antibiotic. A doctor which could cure their patients in a single visit, is a good doctor and very kind as well, because not only the patients get cured easily they also kind of doctor who won’t take any advantage of the patients. But how will it affect the general populations in the future? while science and medical students are very aware of the term ”super-bugs”, the general population do not. The continuos bombardment of antibiotic, and the low understanding regarding the use is giving way to these “super-bugs” to increase in the terms of numbers and kinds.

What are the “super-bugs?”

They could be present as the insects which capable to resist the strongest insecticide, or as the infamous Methicillin Resistant Streptococcus Aureus (MRSA), regardless of the name they could only mean one thing. Trouble.

Like every species, this super-bugs have come a long way, they evolve from the most primitive form to the ones which contain all the necessity to survive. Humans evolve from apes (creationists please do not argue on this), as a species we learn to use tools and to exploit the nature in order to gain the favour, whether to hunt or gather, in a simpler word, we learn how to survive. These super-bugs are also the same, although they don’t use tools they survive because of the difference in their genetic material.

Consider the case of the white butterfly on the height of Industrial revolution in England. They originally were white in colour, because living in a temperate climate they need the colour tone in order to survive from their hunter. however some of them born in a unusual circumstances, with black instead of white as their wings. Easier to be recognised, easier to be hunted is the fate of these black butterfly, however the Industrial Revolution came, and the usual white snow was polluted to become black, and the condition was altered. For the benefit of the story let’s just say, nowadays there are more black butterfly than the white one in England.

The story above is the similar picture in the context of the super-bugs, where they actually also the product natural selections, however the one who acts as the “natural selections” are none other than mankind with their love of antibiotics.

“So it’s just a little bugger which is difficult to be eliminated?” not exactly. This little bugger causes many hospital acquired infection on patients which are recovering from their diseases and finally could cause complications or even death. The fact that they are more antibiotics resistant, would make them very difficult to eliminate with the present level of antibiotics and if they could be eliminated there is still chances for them to evolved to be resistant to that particular antibiotic.

What can we do?

Consider MRSA as a very expensive experience, we can actually slow down the transformation of other bacteria or viruses to become the next “super-bugs”, avoiding arms race between species. How to slow down the transformation is easy that is by do not using antibiotic in order to cure non-significant diseases (common cold, sore throat, fever etc.). The problems (sigh) lies on whether people could understand that they are not supposed to take antibiotic as simple as taking candy.

To raise awareness about this antibiotic issue is the solution, however is not the same as raising awareness about issues like the global warming. It is more like putting a warning on cigarettes’ pack  to tell people the hazard to your health, however it seldom kept them away from smoking. Furthermore, by telling this, people must accept that evolution is real and we are part of it, while in this region people still believe that evolution is a concept where man comes from primate.

It would be long and lengthy process to educate the people, perhaps as long as the development of the new super-bugs, however as it is necessary to be done, none is too late after all.

The movement could began in hospitals or clinics by doctors, in which if there are any patients coming with the symptoms of cold or fever try to explain to them that the disesase did not require the administration of antibiotics, just plenty of rest and liquids and paracetamols is enough. Of course doctor, have to be more than able to explain the matter to the patients and that requires a great communication skills.

What can a patient do then? other than educating themselves, patients are also having the rights to have the proper explanations from the doctor and finally do not judge the doctor based on what medication that they give you or how long does it takes to recover.

As a final notes, I will say that prevention is better than care thus live your life healthily and love your vessels, you can’t actually change them anytime if you have trouble.

Support the system shall we?

As much as my own annoyance at the system, for it’s sometimes confusing, complex, and repetitive. I still feel there’s a need to support it, which could be done by improving the factor that is most likely to cause error in the system itself. the human factor.

A system in for collecting print jobs in Monash University Malaysia, which I view as a solution for creating order (one person could only take his/her print job and not others) and for the helping of environment (If one person get the print that he/she needed than there is no need to print another set of copies thus it does not waste the paper)has been failed considerably.

As the new semester kicks in the number of students increased considerably and many still don’t know how to collect the printing account (shown by many papers which are not collected by them at the end of the day), in which the explanation could be the information is not clear enough, or they are just plain ignorant (in which I hope they would change).

In the end, this is just a very small example in my life, there are larger problems in the world right now. I just hoped that, we all could support the system that is good, criticize ones that is had flaws, and taking the words of Mahatma Gandhi “be the change that you want to see in the world”.

I don’t usually comment about fellow bloggers or any other people that voiced their opinion on the internet but still, when I got this email from the PVC of Monash University Malaysia I know something out of the line had been done.

Dear Students,

It has come to my attention that there have been a number of blogs by
students that are defamatory in nature, causing hurt to the persons
named, and put the students who author the blogs at risk in a number of

ways. I suspect that this has arisen because students are not aware of
the laws of Malaysia relevant to such situations, nor of the University

policies that pertain.

Please note that while free speech is welcome, there are limitations
provided by the law particularly regarding defamation and sedition. It
would appear that some students are not aware of this, and have perhaps

inadvertently contravened the law.

In light of this, the University wishes to provide relevant information

to students regarding the legal and institutional context that applies.

Please find attached a document prepared by the campus solicitor, for
your information, and action as necessary.

NOTICE TO STUDENTS

RE: BLOGGING

It has recently come to the attention of the University that there have

been several blogs written by students on the internet which were
derogatory in nature and made against the University and its lecturers
("the Blogs").

As such, we wish to bring to awareness that there are laws in Malaysia
and disciplinary policies at Monash University relating to such
matters.
The words used in the Blogs could be construed as defamatory or
seditious
words and constitute offences under the said laws and policies, thereby

placing the blogger ("the Offender") in danger of attracting legal
action
and/or disciplinary action against him/her.

Definitions
Words are "defamatory" in nature if the words "tend to lower a person
in
the estimation of right-thinking members of society generally" (per the

Defamation Act 1957) or if the words "makes or publishes any imputation

concerning any person, intending to harm, or knowing or having reason
to
believe that such imputation will harm the reputation of such person"
(per the Penal Code (Revised 1997)).

Words are considered "seditious" if they have a tendency to bring into
hatred or contempt, excite, raise discontent or disaffection, promote
feelings of ill-will and hostility against another person or party (per

the Sedition Act 1948).

Consequences/Dangers for using defamatory or seditious words in blogs
There are numerous legal and/or disciplinary actions which may be taken

against the Offender:-
(i) a civil action for defamation may be initiated in court by the
University and/or the offended lecturer against the Offender;
(ii) a criminal action for sedition may be commenced in court by the
Authorities against the Offender;
(iii) the University may take disciplinary action against the Offender

for committing a misconduct under the Students Disciplinary Policy;
(iv) the University may take disciplinary action against the Offender
for committing an offence under the Acceptable Use of Information
Technology Facilities By Students Policy.

Advice to Students
In view of the above and in view of the very public nature of the
blogs,
the University advises all students as follows:-
(i) to exercise caution when blogging or making any other postings on
the internet so as to avoid writing anything which may be defamatory or

seditious in their blogs or postings;
(ii) to immediately remove any blogs (together with its entire blog
trail) or postings which could be defamatory or seditious in nature;
(iii) to lodge any grievances or complaints through the proper channels

made available at the University, such as through:-
(a) the University's Counselling Services;
(b) MUSA Education Affairs Committee;
(c) the University's Student Services Department;
(d) the Course Managers of the respective Schools.

The University also encourages students to at all times maintain and
uphold (and not tarnish nor prejudice) the good name and reputation of
Monash University as being a premier international university as a good

name and reputation serves to benefit not just the University but also
the students.

Please be so advised.

To be frank, I have observed one particular blog which has let’s say commented things in this university.

These comments, are somehow facts about the live and people in the campus but delivered in a way that is inconsiderate to the people that are becoming the subjects of the comments.

Therefore for this, I have to applaud the University for recognizing this matter quick enough and in the end I just want to added (liberal) democracy has really great to humanity, but somehow uncontrolled, it would lead to anarchy and that is the last thing we wanted after all the troubles in the world isn’t it?

Do scientists make a good businessmen?

Last week I was attending a “seminar” titled “The Importance of Commercialization”, however it turns out that the “seminar” was actually an introduction of a new postgrad course offered in Monash University Australia which is the Master of Business (Commercialising Science and Technology).

Based on the booklet received at the seminar and the seminar itself, this course give its student more choice in their career, which involve the development of wealth-creating opportunities in the business of science and technology. The key features offered in this course is the specific intent to assist student in commercialising leading edge medical, scientific and technology research projects, in other words the course will teach student the fundamentals of business, economics, legal and management skill required to contribute to this process.

OK, let’s face it science student does not essentially make a good businessman nor does business student would make a great scientist, and this is somehow looked like an interesting career path for science student to get out from spending their life in researching or resorting to another career path which totally different from their studies (whom many of them did). So based on the possibilities of these career path this is totally an alternative and promising pathway wasn’t it?

In an economic sense yes it is, because it will give the possibilities for one of the student to become an entrepreneur and build their own company, make a discovery thus a lot of money etc. etc. However the choices are still ours right? If I want to make medicine which people in third country can afford rather than chasing profit it’s still my choice right? If the world was turning because of the money, I still could standing still without it right? If the temptations were there and the chance were given am I a fool not to join in the rally to chase of commercialization?

I don’t mean that scientist does not have the rights to obtain economic wealth, it’s just that if all the orientation is based economically then where does the next research fits? is it for creating a cure for a disease or is it for making a profit from a cure of a disease?

The knowledge for this is significant, but it is not the mindset of scientist should have, I believe, because there are still people who can’t afford medicine in this world, and our burden is to provide them with what is available, not overcharge them.
